A scam noted periodically this year in Coffey County has returned.
The Sheriff’s Office has noted some version of a bail bond scam at times this summer and fall. The most recent case involves somebody allegedly employed by the Sheriff’s Office and talking with a resident in a “harassing and demanding” way in an effort to extract money.
The Sheriff’s Office says scammers have called family members identifying themselves as from the county’s Pre-Trial Court Services Department and then saying they can be an option to using bail bond businesses. In the earlier rounds, scammers have said family members need to send up to $1,200 to get their loved one out of jail.
The Sheriff’s Office says it does not offer any alternates for bailing out residents. It has a list of approved bail bonds companies on its website, coffeycountysheriff.org. The Sheriff’s Office also says bond representatives will meet at the jail for paperwork and payment. The Sheriff’s Office will not make direct calls about bail bond solutions and will not require payments to it on behalf of another county agency.
