Giving Tuesday was good to Flint Hills Technical College.
The college created a special fundraiser for scholarships as part of the national Giving Tuesday philanthropy effort, and early indications are the fundraiser went well. Events and Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Anderson says $12,000 was raised. She also says this money will help bridge gaps for students wanting to attend college but who may not have enough financial resources available to do so.
Anderson says scholarships can determine whether a student can go to college or not.
Much of the success Tuesday came through several matching partners, including Distinguished Alum Robert Nelson, the Emporia Masonic Lodge, Emporia Orthodontics and an anonymous donor — which pledged $2,500 in matching funds. Donors could either give to the scholarship program in general or target their gifts to different college programs. The donor with the biggest gift — who has not been named — will get a chance to have dinner with College President Caron Daugherty.
Flint Hills Technical College now educates more than 1,700 students per year, focusing its programs on regional workforce needs. The Foundation continues its work to enhance scholarships, including the upcoming Wrangler on the Rocks silent auction and the annual Gala and Benefit Auction.
