Emporia High boys wrestling starts a new season on Saturday. Brook Medrano returns to lead a Spartan team that sent seven to the 5A State Tournament a year ago. Jackson Goodman (132), Garrett LeBlanc (165), and Jose Vargas (285) all return with experience competing at state.
Coach Medrano has a full room of athletes ready to compete, with over 80 guys on the team.
The Spartans hope to get back to the dominance they’ve shown in the past.
The lone Emporia wrestler ranked is Goodman and he wants to live up to it.
Vargas has some of the same goals for himself.
He had one big focus during the offseason.
LeBlanc would love to live up to the Spartan tradition.
He’s really looking forward to his senior night.
A dream scenario for Coach Medrano includes sending 14 to state.
The black and red also bring back Kolton Wyatt (113), who competed at state last year.
Emporia opens the season Saturday at the Junction City Tournament.
