Dismissed — for now.
The Lyon County Attorney’s Office had originally filed charges against Patricio Morales and Fernando Rodriguez Williams earlier this year after an alleged street racing incident in downtown Emporia led to significant injuries for two people in mid-August. After a request by prosecutors, Judge Doug Jones dropped charges against both Morales, an adult, and Rodriguez-Williams, a juvenile. County Attorney Amy Aranda says charges may be refiled, depending on additional investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Morales and Rodriguez-Williams were allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed in the 300 block of East Sixth when Morales’ car broadsided another car driven by Ahmad Scott of Emporia. Scott and a passenger, Malik Dorsey were taken to Newman Regional Health with unspecified injuries. Morales was arrested shortly after the incident, while Rodriguez-Williams allegedly fled the scene and was arrested later. Morales was initially charged with aggravated battery, reckless driving and racing on highways. Rodriguez-Williams was charged with aggravated battery before charges were dropped.
