The Emporia State track and field teams opened the year at the Washburn Alumni Invitational Saturday in Topeka, Kan. Mele Taula made a triumphant return for the Lady Hornets after missing last year with a medical redshirt. Taula, a former national qualifier, won the weight throw setting a meet record of 57 feet-4 1/4 inches and was the runner-up in the shot put. Stella Agbokbah set a school record with a runner up finish in the 200m dash and finished sixth in the 60m dash. Lou Dumas was second in the women’s 60m hurdles while Brook Nolte was runner-up in the 5000m run. For the Hornet men, Zack Sulzen-Watson and Connor Deters went 1-2 in the men’s shot put. Cooper Schroer was runner-up in the men’s 800m. ESU heads toward the mountains and the CRC Pre-Holiday Invite on Friday and Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
