Emporia Fire responded to a small fire Sunday morning.
Crews headed to 1120 Chestnut shortly after 8:15 am after reports of sparks coming out of the floor of a house. The fire was largely out when crews arrived, but Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says there appears to be minor damage to some flooring near a fireplace.
Damage from fire and smoke was minor. Nobody was hurt.
Americus and Olpe were toned out as mutual response but were canceled before arriving.
Air temperatures were in the single digits with wind chills below zero when calls came to Lyon County Emergency Dispatch. Conley encourages homeowners with fireplaces to have those checked every year, as well as using dry wood, keeping the dampener open and making sure fires are out before going to sleep. Also:
This is also a time of year when furnaces start emitting smells that resemble smoke. Conley says it’s not too late to get those checked as well.
Having working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are a crucial safety measure this time of year, and the Emporia Fire Department is still encouraging residents to take advantage of its free installation program for combination detectors. Residents can go online to emporiaks.gov/getalarmed to apply.
Conley says the cause of Sunday’s incident is different from the two fires that developed Friday, one that damaged a dwelling and two other buildings at 1302 East on Friday afternoon and another that damaged a house at 2207 East Bayfront Court on Friday night, The causes of the Friday fires are currently undetermined.
