The city of Emporia is eyeing summer 2026 as the end of a significant street improvement project near the west city limits.
Overlander Road has been under a makeover for about five weeks. City Engineer Jim Ubert says the reason is simple: the street doesn’t handle today’s traffic as well as it should.
Ubert says the overall goal is to benefit Industrial Park II, in part through a new bridge.
A water line has been bored under an existing gas pipeline and the aforementioned storm sewer installation process has started. Later, a 12-inch water main will be installed to serve Industrial Park II just west of Emporia.
Summer 2026 looks like it will be the time when the Southeast Transmission waterline replacement project ends, and fall will see the start of a notable resurfacing project through a partnership with the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Ubert says K-99 has other work coming next year closer to the southern city limits.
The city will also have its traditional Hazardous Sidewalk and Street Rehab projects this upcoming summer as well.
