Emporia boys wrestling finished second at the Winter Classic in Emporia on Saturday. The Spartans 168 points trailed only Hutchinson 220 in the event.
EHS competed in three gold matches and came away on top in two of them.
Jose Vargas won the heavyweight bracket and is an impressive 12-0. The senior was extra motivated by a loss last year and being the two seed in the tournament this year.
Bryan Cubias took home gold at 132.
The freshman received a tremendous amount of praise from head coach Brook Medrano.
Kolton Wyatt 113 has secured silver in the last two tournaments. The junior has changed up his style for this season and it is paying dividends.
Three Spartans competed for bronze. Takeo Medrano (106), Jackson Goodman (144), and Zaiden Ortiz (150). The freshman Medrano had the best finish in his young career in fourth. Goodman and Ortiz also finished fourth.
Second place wasn’t the goal for Coach Medrano.
The Spartans return to action hosting Spring Hill on January 3.
