A grass fire between Emporia and Americus kept several fire departments busy Saturday morning.
The fire was reported at 765 Road 200 shortly before 10:30 am. Emporia Fire Capt. Willie Ward says the fire was Initially small in nature but grew quickly because of several factors, most notably north wind gusts above 30 mph.
Ward says fire crews had to split their resources to make sure the fire was out, given the layouts of different fences and other property entrances.
Ward says the fire was put out with no damage to structures or hay bales. Ward says an electrical issue with a power pole along Road 200 appears to be the cause. There are no reports of injuries.
Lyon County District 4, or Emporia’s rural fire unit, was among the responders, along with Americus and Reading. Dunlap was also toned out.
After a high fire danger Saturday, Sunday could also have elevated fire danger with lower relative humidity levels, although wind gusts will likely be under 25 mph. The rest of the holiday week looks to have moderate to high fire danger.
