Kansas has scored big by bringing the Kansas City Chiefs across state lines.
Following a vote by the Legislative Coordinating Council on a funding package, the Chiefs formally agreed to build a brand-new, $3 billion stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, thus setting the stage to leave Arrowhead Stadium at the end of the 2030 season. The Chiefs will also build a new administrative office complex and practice facility in Olathe.
With almost $4.5 billion in economic impact during construction and over $1 billion annually after that, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says the move is huge for Kansas.
Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson says a lot of people were responsible, from former House Speaker Ron Ryckman to current Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland.
Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins says there is much more to this announcement besides the Chiefs playing in Kansas City.
The stadium will use STAR Bonds to pay for 70 percent of stadium construction near the Legends of Kansas City shopping complex, Kansas Speedway, Children’s Mercy Park — the home of Sporting KC — and Legends Field, the home of the minor-league Kansas City Monarchs baseball team. Engineering work will begin soon.
KVOE has much more in sports, both on-air and online, through the day.
