A Council Grove woman and Colorado man were hurt after a crash north of Emporia on Christmas Eve.
Lyon County Deputy Fernando Zuniga says the crash happened near the junction of Kansas Highway 99, Road L and Road 240 shortly before 6:30 pm. The investigation indicates 62-year-old Merle Jean Cazier of Council Grove was driving an SUV northbound and was initially heading north on L but decided to take K-99 to the east. Cazier overcorrected, sending the SUV into a ditch, where it turned sideways before rolling as it hit a ditch.
Cazier was wearing her seatbelt, so she stayed in her seat until a passerby stopped to render aid. Cazier’s passenger, 41-year-old Chad Wolley of Colorado, was not belted and was thrown from the vehicle. Wolley was also trapped under the SUV until rescue crews got him extricated. Both were taken to Newman Regional Health with unknown injuries.
Besides deputies, Emporia Fire/EMS and Reading Benefit Fire responded to the wreck site.
