If the current forecast holds, thick fog may finally be a thing of the past for a while.
Fog has dissipated following yet another dense fog advisory for Lyon and most surrounding counties during the early-morning hours Friday. Visibility got down to a block in Emporia for the third straight morning before the fog cleared. Dense fog advisories have now affected area counties for four straight days.
Coinciding with the thick fog has been record warmth. Christmas Eve got to 70 degrees, easily besting the prior record of 59 degrees set in 2021. Christmas Day topped out at 74 degrees, above the prior record of 72 degrees set four years ago. Friday’s projected high is 70 degrees, above the current record of 69 set in 2008. Saturday’s expected high is 72 degrees, above the current record of 65 initially set in 2003 and last matched in 2021.
Sunday’s high temperatures get to the upper 50s early before falling. Following lows in the mid-teens Sunday night, Monday’s high will only get to the low 30s.

12:45 am Friday: Dense fog advisories posted Friday morning
Area counties are in — you guessed it — another dense fog advisory.
Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in an advisory until 4 am, while Chase County is in a separate advisory until 3 am. Visibility at or below a quarter-mile is expected.
This is the fourth straight morning area counties have been in a dense fog advisory. If you run into fog while driving, slow down, use low-beam headlights without the auto setting and increase the distance between your vehicle and others nearby.
