Washburn swept the Turnpike Tussle at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan. on Saturday.
In the women’s game, Washburn started the game on an 18-2 run and never looked back on the way to an 86-59 victory over the Lady Hornets. It is the most lopsided win by Washburn in the history of the series. Washburn led 23-6 after the first as ESU missed 10 of 11 shots in the first ten minutes in the game. Washburn led for all but nine seconds in the game and led by as many as 33 in the fourth quarter. Payton Sterk scored 21 points to lead Washburn while Yiibari Nwidadah added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the home team. ESU (7-6, 1-3 MIAA) was led by Gracie Gilpin’s 13.
In the men’s game, #1 Washburn dominated the second half on the way to a 91-66 victory over the Hornets. ESU led for much of the half and Washburn used two late runs to take a six-point halftime lead, which was the biggest by either team in the frame, but that run continued early in the second half as Washburn took a double-digit lead in the first minutes of the second and E-State never got close again. Head coach Tom Billeter said there were many key stats in the game that led to the Ichabod win.
The Hornets were outscored 41-4 in points off turnovers and 22-4 off the fast break. ESU (4-9, 0-4 MIAA) returns to action Thursday hosting Fort Hays State. Coverage begins at 5:00 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
