Emporia High basketball split with Hayden in Topeka on Tuesday.
In the girl’s game, Hayden earned their first Centennial League win by beating Emporia 53-37
Hayden led after the first 10-5. The Wildcats grew their advantage to 12 at the break, 23-11. Hayden led by as many as 20 in the third, but settled for a 39-21 lead to end the third.
Kaylee DeWitt had a team high 13 points and Maycee Davis added nine.
Head coach Bill Nienstedt was proud of the growth from the first to the second Hayden matchup. His defense kept him in the game early.
EHS dropped to 4-5 (0-1) and will travel to Hays on Friday.
In the boy’s game, Emporia stormed back from down 15 with less than five minutes to go to earn the win 59-56.
The two clubs traded baskets early to finish tied at ten after one. Hayden went on a run in the second to take a 29-22 advantage into half. Emporia managed just eight points in the third as they trailed 43-30. Harry Trelc hit the tieing three at 56 with 1:40 to play and the Spartans made free throws to secure the win.
Terrick Franklin had a team high 21 points. Rylan Crowell had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Head coach Evan Burns says wins like show a lot about his team.
EHS stays perfect at 9-0 (1-0).
The black and red travel to Hays on Friday for a girl/boy doubleheader. KVOE will have the pregame at 5:45 p.m.
