Emporia High basketball dropped both games with Hays on Friday at the new Hays High School.
In the girl’s game, the Indians showed why they are the 5th ranked team in 5A with a 51-25 win.
Hays opened on an 8-0 run to lead 10-2 after eight minutes. The Indians grew their advantage to 17 at half, 26-9. EHS managed the first two points of the third, but Hays took a 44-17 lead to the fourth.
Maycee Davis led the team with 14 points.
The Lady Spartans fall to 4-6 and host Newton on Tuesday.
Two top ten teams met in 5A in the boy’s matchup as Hays handed Emporia their first loss 55-54.
Emporia scored the first three points of the game, but Hays closed up 14-9 in the first. The Indians pulled out ahead by 15 late in the second while Emporia cut into the deficit to make it 29-19 at half. The Spartans stormed all the way back using a 15-3 run to tie it at 43. EHS took a 54-52 lead in the closing minute.
EHS shot 11-19 from the free throw line in the loss.
Evan Burn’s club tried to complete a double digit comeback for a second straight game.
Rylan Crowell had a team high 23 and Terrick Fracklin added 13.
The Spartans drop to 9-1 and host Newton on Tuesday.
