The long and fruitful life of Evora Wheeler was celebrated this past weekend.
Family, friends and residents gathered at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building for a memorial service Saturday. First Congregational Church Pastor Ashton McDonald says Wheeler was well-known for her community service, but recognition was not what Wheeler was all about.
Wheeler’s service included a term on the Emporia City Commission, a career in real estate, a long association with the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, involvement in numerous service groups and all the baked goods she made for various fundraisers. McDonald says it was all part of Wheeler’s efforts to live by the Golden Rule.
One of Wheeler’s granddaughters, Heather Jardell, says the outpouring of support would have humbled Wheeler.
Jardell also says Wheeler “never let anything stand in her way.”
Residents wanting to make a memorial contribution can donate to the Evora Ann Rees Wheeler Memorial Fund through VanArsdale Funeral Home. Wheeler was 94 when she passed away Jan. 2.
