Kansas’ state birthday is coming soon, and the Lyon County History Center has activities on two different dates to celebrate — while the David Traylor Zoo is partnering with Emporia State University’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center on another set of activities.
Director Greg Jordan says there will be birthday parties from 1-3 pm this upcoming Saturday, along with another one from 10 am to noon Jan. 29.
Why have two celebrations? Simple — scheduling.
Kansas Day is Jan. 29, marking the date when it became the 34th state in 1861. Residents are encouraged to attend either or both events, which are free of charge.
Residents are also encouraged to attend the Science Saturday activities at the David Traylor Zoo Education Center, courtesy PAROC, this upcoming Saturday. Activities from 10 am to noon will have information about Kansas-native animals, plants and ecosystems, as well as how Kansas has changed over the last several centuries. There will also be a free concert at the zoo from Annie Wilson of the Tallgrass Express Band. Attendees need to register at esuparoc.com.
At the History Center, Jordan also says plans continue developing for noting America’s 250th birthday later this year. A traveling exhibit comes to Emporia from mid-May to mid-June, and the History Center is working with Emporia State’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences to create different historical materials, community exhibits and other activities.
