Daniel Olivarez will return to Lyon County District Court in March to be sentenced on charges of aggravated indecent liberties, aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.
Sentencing was supposed to take place Wednesday, but that was delayed because Olivarez fired his defense attorney, Rick Meier, shortly before the hearing. Olivarez had already fired local attorneys Paul Dean and Rand Simmons earlier in the court proceedings.
Sentencing now will be March 18.
Olivarez was initially facing a much longer list of charges after an alleged incident in early January 2024, where Olivarez held several people inside an Emporia home at gunpoint, having one of the alleged victims drive him to another location and then forcing a better than three-hour standoff before surrendering to local authorities, as well as illegal sexual activity against a then-10-year-old child between April 2023 and December 2023.
Olivarez accepted an Alford plea, meaning he maintains his innocence while realizing there is enough evidence to convict, on the indecent liberties charge. Olivarez also pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated kidnapping.
