Chase County Sheriff Jacob Welsh says his office has received a major grant for several aspects of law enforcement and emergency operations.
Welsh says the department has secured over $360,000 as part of work by US Senator Jerry Moran.
Funding will benefit upgrades to camera infrastructure, public safety radio systems and storm sirens, culminating earlier work by Emergency Management Director Scott Wiltse on the sirens.
Welsh started the application process in 2024. He says the funding will help the department’s capacity to community, respond and protect both law enforcement staff and the general public. Most of the money goes to the sirens, but Welsh says this will also let the Sheriff’s Office use encrypted transmissions in much the same way Lyon County has been using for over a year. Another benefit?
After moving through the House and Senate, the funding package is now on President Trump’s desk for approval. Exactly when the Sheriff’s Office can use the funding is to be determined.
