The extreme cold seen early Monday is letting up just in time for Emporia’s annual homeless Point in Time Count.
CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness Housing Specialist and local PIT Coordinator Joe Reed says this year’s effort will see a different operation than in years past.
Reed says several community groups are involved in the PIT Count this week.
The PIT Count is Wednesday night, with counting to take place Thursday. Headquarters will be Corner House at 418 Market, and Reed is encouraging homeless residents to go to Corner House for the count.
The PIT Count is led by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Reed says it’s mandated for cities and towns receiving Continuum of Care funding and/or resources benefiting the local homeless population. The count is always held in January. Reed says winter is a time when the need for urgent or emergency short-term services is at its highest.
Volunteers are requested. Interested residents can call Reed directly at 620-340-3572.
