Americus residents are asked to attend a town hall meeting early next month on the future of the city’s police department.
Earlier this month, the Americus City Council decided to end operations effective Feb. 10, citing a lack of applicants recently, increasing costs, meeting state and federal requirements and what the city says are limited hours currently worked by the department’s only officer.
The plan is to partner with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office for responsible use of taxpayer money to provide “protection and emergency response.” In a letter to residents, Council President Nicky Nuessen says resident safety is the city’s highest priority.
A public hearing is coming at 7 pm Feb. 3 at Americus City Hall.
