The Emporia State softball team scored four runs in the third on the way to a 5-2 victory over Lewis in the Lone Star College Classic in Mansfield, Texas on Friday. Lewis used two walks in the first inning to get on the board first, but the Lady Hornets erupted into the lead in the third. After a leadoff walk, single, and another groundout, Brooke Flewelling delivered a two-out single to right field to plate two runs. Avery Brewer then launched a 3-2 pitch to right field for two more runs. ESU gave up a run the next inning, but the Big Gold got the run back with back-to-back ground rule doubles by Karli Wehunt and Addyson Easter to leadoff the sixth. Hannah Butterbaugh gave up three hits and two runs in four innings for a no decision in her Lady Hornet debut. Izzy Sloan (1-0) scattered three hits with four strikeouts over the final three innings to pick up the win.
In ESU’s second game of the day, the Big Gold cruised to an 8-0 run-rule victory over East Central in six innings. Butterbaugh, batting in game two, got the Lady Hornets started with an RBI single before later stealing home. Elina Bartlett, Sydney Wagner, and Flewelling also drove in runs later in the frame. Later in the sixth, Flewelling belted her second home run of the season before E-State tacked on thanks to an ECU wild pitch and walk.
