Emporia’s Corner House hosted a fundraiser Saturday centered around community and celebration.
The local substance abuse counseling services provider hosted a biscuits and gravy breakfast at its offices at 418 Market Street, Saturday morning, welcoming all residents through their doors. Corner House Peer Mentor and Substance Use Activities Coordinator Grace Margeson says this was the third breakfast event the agency has hosted in recent years, with all proceeds set to benefit activities focused on celebrating sobriety.
Margeson says the idea behind the breakfast’s conception was simple: “Everyone loves biscuits and gravy.” But the benefits of it, aside from the dollars raised, went far beyond what they had originally anticipated, namely the sense of community and connection it helped to foster among diners, especially those who are currently on their respective journeys to recovery.
Fundraising totals from the breakfast are currently pending. The Corner House offices have been very busy as of late, as before hosting the breakfast Saturday, the offices served as the base of operations for the annual Point in Time (PIT) count Wednesday and Thursday.
Corner House was founded in 1975, offering services such as alcohol and drug assessments and evaluations, different levels of outpatient treatment for adults and teenagers, and employee assistance programs.
