After an extremely successful inaugural event, Kansas Spanish Speakers is looking forward to an even larger turnout at its second Loteria Night coming next week.
The second event will be held at the Flint Hills Technical College Conference room Friday night. The first event was held last July inside of the Davis Theatre at the Emporia Arts Council and exceeded all expectations organizers had, filling the space.
This prompted the move to FHTC, according to Spanish Speakers Executive Director Lelan Dains, saying the extra space will be helpful; however, he expects that it will fill up quite quickly, too, noting residents are still buzzing after the July event. With this in mind, Dains says doors for the evening will open at 5 pm, and he encourages residents to get there early to make sure they have a seat.
Along with a venue change, Dains says another change from the July event will be that the drawing of cards will be done electronically this time around.
Loteria is a Spanish version of Bingo that uses pictures rather than numbers. Like Bingo, players will be competing for several prizes donated from residents and businesses, with Dains running through some of the items during an interview with KVOE News.
Dains could not offer an exact amount for the “cold, hard cash” grand prize, noting that the pot is still growing at the moment; however, he did say it will likely be a “few hundred dollars.” For those wanting to participate in Loteria, there is no sign-up or registration needed as the event will operate on a first come first serve basis.
In addition to the prizes and games, Little Colombia Bakery will be on hand selling snacks during the evening. Loteria will begin at 6 pm and will cost $10 per card.
The evening will once again be hosted by local singer and business owner Jenny “Lady J” Losada and KVOE On Air Personality Tagan Trahoon.
