The city of Emporia is noting several milestones with two ongoing infrastructure projects.
The Southeast Transmission water main replacement project is now around 60 percent, with over 24,000 feet of new water mains and over 220 new service lines installed. The main work zone is now First Avenue from Neosho to Congress, with other work at First and Commercial. The project, the last in a three-part effort to improve water flow and consistent service across town, began in June 2025 and is still set to end this upcoming fall. Prior phases included Peyton Street and the 24th and Industrial project.
Meanwhile, the Overlander Road project is now into bridge construction after a 100-year-old bridge on West Sixth was demolished and removed. Installing a 12-inch water main is now at 75 percent complete. Installing a storm sewer is now 30-40 percent complete. Rock base has also been installed on West Sixth near Overlander. The project is expanding Overlander to three lanes as a way to better serve Industrial Park II nearby. The city expect completion by late this summer.
City Engineer Jim Ubert will update both projects and look ahead to other 2026 construction projects on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:20 am Thursday.
