Burlington Police Chief Mike Roney is advising residents about a pair of scams.
Last month, Burlington Police officers responded to a theft by deception incident where the victim reported taking a call from somebody claiming to be a lieutenant with the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office. The caller said the victim had an active warrant for not reporting for jury duty before threatening legal action. The victim also says the caller already had different personal information, including Social Security number, date of birth, address and phone number — so the victim lost about $2,000 after being told to buy gift cards and transfer funds using cryptocurrency.
Also, Burlington Police says a woman received a call from somebody claiming to represent the department as he collected money for a fundraiser.
Roney says Burlington PD is not holding any fundraisers and is not making calls for donations at this time. If you receive calls like these, hang up without providing personal information and call your local law enforcement agency.
