Emporia split Friday with Manhattan in the Little Apple.
In the girl’s contest, Manhattan’s full court pressure was too much for Emporia to handle in the 71-31 loss.
The Indians never trailed in the first as they took an early 13-9 lead. MHS used the three ball to pull away in the second and built a 35-22 advantage at half. The seventh ranked in 6A team pulled away in the third and grew the lead to 58-30.
Bill Nienstedt said Emporia doesn’t have the depth to contend with a team like Manhattan.
Kaylee DeWitt had a team high eight points while Bailey Wiltz chipped in seven,
The Lady Spartans drop to 6-11 (0-4).
Emporia will host Junction City on Tuesday.
In the boy’s contest, Emporia picked up the overtime win 73-70 over Manhattan.
EHS used an early 9-0 run to take a 9-2 advantage in the first quarter. The Spartans closed the quarter up 17-6. Fouls plagued Emporia in the second as they committed nine compared to one by Manhattan. The Indians used all the whistles to take the lead 34-28. EHS won the third and cut the deficit to 45-43. The Spartans tied it up at 54 with less than three minutes to go and the game went to overtime tied at 62. The Black and Red opened with the first five points in OT.
Evan Burns says the loss to Topeka propelled the fast start.
Rylan Crowell took over in the second half scoring 24 of his 26 points. Terrick Franklin added 16 while Harry Trelc ended with 15.
The Spartans improve 14 -3 (3-1).
Emporia will host Junction City on Tuesday.
