The David Traylor Zoo and Emporia State’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center welcomed residents to the Zoo Education Center to celebrate Kansas Day.
The event was designed to introduce people of all ages to some of the area’s native plants and animals. PAROC Graduate Assistant Laura Budke says it’s good to remember we as humans aren’t alone in Kansas.
Budke helped to organize the event. She says a big focus was to introduce people to native plants and animals.
Besides getting to see the the box turtle, the state reptile; the American bison, the state mammal; channel catfish, the state fish; barred tiger salamander, the state amphibian; and the western meadowlark, the state bird; attendees could also get a look at furs, tracks and different animal waste while playing a range of games. Annie Wilson of the Tallgrass Express Band also played a short interactive concert during the event.
