Emporia State athletics had a full weekend in the spring crossover season.
The track and field teams started the weekend on Friday at the Bearcat Invite in Maryville, Mo. Mia Manley was the runner up in the women’s pole vault. Luke Grace was in second position after day one of the men’s heptathlon and finished the event in third. Connor Peters finished second in the shot put throwing 57 feet-9 1/2 inches. ESU’s men’s 4x400m relay team of Braden Lipgens, Israel Domeh, Andrew Holton, and Emmanuel Dukpe finished second while Barbara Bentum won the 200m open race. Stella Agbokpah was second in the 200m invitational race.
The Lady Hornet softball team wrapped up the weekend with three more games at the Alvy Early Memorial Classic. The team started with a split on Saturday defeating old MIAA rival Truman State 6-1 before dropping an 8-4 decision to Harding. It was a low scoring affair in the first game with ESU plating three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to come away with the win. Addison Callaway hit her first career home run in the win. The Bisons jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of two-run dingers early in the second game and led 7-1 through four frames on the way to the win. The Lady Hornet softballers fell behind early on Sunday and couldn’t catch up in a 4-3 defeat to St. Mary’s. The Rattlers plated three in the third to take the lead. ESU scored two in the fourth including and Avery Brewer RBI. After giving up another run in the fifth, the Lady Hornets scored again on a ground out in the sixth, but couldn’t get anything going in the seventh. ESU (6-4) heads to Silver Lake, Kan. on Friday, February 20 for the Washburn Tournament.
The women’s tennis team beat Seward County CC 6-1 in an exhibition on Saturday. The men picked up a 6-1 exhibition win over the Saints on Sunday.
