The rivalry between the Waverly Bulldogs and the Chase County Bulldogs delivered plenty of drama Friday night, with Chase County taking the girls contest and Waverly answering in the boys game.
In the girls’ matchup, Waverly came out strong and led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 16-9 in the second quarter before Chase County completely flipped the game. Chase County closed the half on an 18-0 run to take a 29-18 lead into the break.
Chase County’s Head Coach Clayton Happy was pleased with how his team responded after a timeout trailing by 7 to start the second quarter.
Waverly regrouped in the third quarter and chipped away, much in part to a 12-0 run to end the quarter but Chase County still held a slim 31-30 edge heading into the fourth. Waverly was able to tie the game at 31-31 with seven minutes to play but from there, Chase County responded with a strong finish, pulling away for a 47-36 victory.
Madelyn Wilson led Chase County with 16 points, matching Waverly’s Kate Wagner for game-high honors. Waverly struggled with ball security, committing 34 turnovers. Chase County did much of its damage inside, finishing 17 of 43 from two-point range.
In the boys’ game, Waverly used a big first-quarter run to seize control early. After trailing 7-6, Waverly closed the opening period on an 11-0 run to lead 17-7. The Bulldogs carried that momentum into halftime, building a 34-20 advantage.
Chase County stormed back in the third quarter and trimmed the deficit to 39-37 heading into the fourth. The teams traded blows down the stretch, and Chase County managed to tie the game at 47-47 but could not reclaim the lead. Waverly held on for a 52-50 win.

Chase County had one final chance at the buzzer, but a potential game-winning three-pointer sailed wide left. Maddex Beyer led all scorers with 21 points for Chase County, while Dustin Foster paced Waverly with 19. From beyond the arc, Waverly finished 4 of 22, while Chase County went 6 of 22.
