Hayden swept Emporia in Centennial League action Friday in Emporia.
In the girls’ game, Hayden cruised to a 57-25 victory.
The Wildcats held EHS to two first quarter points as they took a 12-2 lead. The Lady Spartans claimed the second as Kinsley Hines, who was named the Queen of Hearts for the Sweetheart Dance, connected on two threes, 14-7. Hayden took a 19-16 advantage to intermission. An 18-0 run to open the third quarter by the Wildcats put the game out of reach for Emporia. Hayden led 47-22 after three.
Assistant Coach Brett Stewart thought the Hayden intensity in the third quarter was the difference.
Maycee Davis had a team high seven points Hines finished with six.
EHS falls to 7-12 (1-5).
In the boys’ game, Hayden used a strong fourth quarter to pull out the 56-48 win.
The Spartans opened on an 8-0 which was answered by 14 straight by the Wildcats, who led 14-8 after one. EHS took the lead back in the second, 20-18, after Harry Trelc splashed in two triples. Both clubs traded baskets in a back-and-forth third with Emporia leading 36-35. Hayden had their largest lead of eight, 48-40, with 3:40 left in the fourth. The Spartans never got closer than five.
Layups and free throws cost Evan Burn’s club.
Emporia shot 9/15 from the charity stripe.
Rylan Crowell had a team high 16. Terrick Franklin added 13.
EHS drops to 15-4 (4-2).
Emporia travels to Washburn Rural on Tuesday.
