The Chase County Bulldogs and the Madison Bulldogs split a thrilling doubleheader Tuesday night, with Chase County rallying late to win the girls contest and Madison pulling away in the boys game.
In the girl’s matchup, Madison controlled much of the night early on. The Bulldogs led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and used a 10-0 run to open the second period to build momentum. Madison held a 21-13 advantage at halftime and extended the lead to 28-19 by the end of the third quarter.
But Chase County saved its best for last.
After trailing the entire game, Chase County finally grabbed its first lead with just 1:30 remaining, going in front 33-32. Madison had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but a three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, sealing a 35-32 Chase County victory.
Madelyn Wilson powered Chase County with 18 points. Madison was led by Sadie Albert with 11 points.
Coach Clayton Happy credits his defense for the win.
Turnovers proved costly for Madison, which committed 21 in the game, including 15 in the second half. Chase County struggled from long range, finishing just 1-of-19 from three-point range, but found success inside, converting 13-of-30 attempts from two-point range.
In the boy’s contest, Madison held steady control throughout.
Madison led 15-13 after one quarter and edged ahead 31-30 by halftime. The Bulldogs created some breathing room in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 45-38, and pulled away in the fourth for a 60-47 win.
