Emporia Fire is using a fire incident from Monday to remind residents about local fire policy.
Fire Capt. Greg Davis says crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Union after a reported structure fire around 6 pm. Instead of any structure fire damage, firefighters discovered a leaf burn in the front yard.
Davis says the incident highlights several fire-related policies in the city limits, which vary somewhat from policies for other Lyon County residents:
*All burns in the city limits have to be reported ahead of schedule to Emporia Fire at 620-343-4230
*Burns will not be allowed when wind speeds will be above 15 mph
*Yard waste is the only allowed burn in the city limits
*Yard waste fires have to be at least 50 feet from any structure
*Residents conducting yard waste burns must have a water source nearby
Lyon County residents outside the Emporia city limits need to go online to lyoncountyks.gov and use an online form to report burns are starting and ending. Residents can also call Emergency Communications at 620-343-4225 if online access is a concern or is inconvenient.
