The Emporia State baseball team run-ruled the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions 14-4 to open MIAA play on the road Friday afternoon. An Evan Abbott single and Noah Steele homer put the Hornets on top and they never trailed. ESU built the lead to 7-0 before the Lions found a four-run sixth to provide some resistance, but the Hornets tagged UAFS for a six-run seventh and put the game away with one run in the eighth. ESU (11-1, 1-0 MIAA) matched a season-high with 18 hits in the game led by Brady Unrein who went 4-for-6 with a double, a homer, and two RBI’s. Frankie Santiago and Dylan Brisbois also homered for the Big Gold as Seth Stover (2-0) went 5.0 innings allowing three hits and three earned runs to take the win. Game two of the series is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
