What makes a healthy heart? Visitors to the Bowyer Community Building Wednesday morning received the answer, or rather answers, to that question during the second annual Heart Health Fair.
The fair, organized by Newman Regional Health, provided a welcoming space for residents to meet and converse with Newman practitioners, specifically those in the cardiac field, to discuss heart health, prevention strategies, technology and more. Newman Cardiologist Dr. Colleen Fearon says the one-on-one interactions outside of the doctor’s office is an important offering as it helps to alleviate some of the stress or anxiety patients may have around the topic of health.
Dr. Fearon, who has a wealth of experience in major metropolitan cities, including Atlanta, Detroit, and several locations across California, before coming to Emporia, says the local cardiac cath lab and team are comparable to, if not higher than, most metropolitan healthcare facilities.
In addition to one-on-one discussions, patients could also receive a free blood pressure test, engage with local medical vendors and even see some of the technology used to assist cardiac patients up close and personal. Dr. Michael Lloyd says that much like having one-on-one interactions with providers, seeing the equipment up close and personal can help to alleviate a great deal of uncertainty and fear for cardiac patients.
Dr. Lloyd notes that advancements in technology and techniques are being made every day, which is important because new challenges and concerns can arise frequently.
