Power has been restored to more than 1,100 Evergy customers following a significant power outage in the downtown corridor Thursday morning.
The outage was first reported around 10:15 am, with Evergy’s outage map indicating customers were offline from 12th and Commercial south to near Road 155. Locations, including the David Traylor Zoo, Logan Avenue School, and Peter Pan Park, were affected for a time. According to Evergy, the outage developed after a vehicle struck a power pole near the intersection at First and Commercial.
Emporia Fire Captain Willie Ward tells KVOE News, there was a contract crew working on a waterline in the alley between Commercial and Mechanic at the time of the incident. Ward says all indications are the work likely played a role in the inciting incident; however, he could not confirm the exact details of how the incident unfolded.
10:45 am: Over 1,100 Evergy customers in Emporia without power
Over 1,100 Evergy customers are currently offline in central and southern Emporia.
Outage issues were first reported shortly after 10:15 am. Evergy’s outage map indicates customers are offline from 12th and Commercial south to near Road 155, with locations like most of downtown Emporia, the David Traylor Zoo, Logan Avenue School and Peter Pan Park all affected after a vehicle hit a pole near the First and Commercial intersection. No injuries were reported.
