For the 138th year, members of Emporia’s Welsh population came together to celebrate the country’s most honored holiday, St. David’s Day.
The holiday celebrates St. David, the Sixth Century Patron Saint of Wales, known for his preaching ability, as well as founding monasteries and churches in Wales and southwest England. In recognition of St. David’s Day, the Emporia Presbyterian Church West Campus once again hosted the annual St. David’s Day Concert, which included a choir made up of community members and was led by Dr. Eluned Jones.
The selections for Sunday’s concert included the singing of both the American and Welsh national anthems and various hymns, including the traditional Welsh welcome song “We’ll Keep A Welcome Hill in the Hillside.”
As is tradition locally, Sunday’s concert was followed by a gathering in the basement of the church where concert goers and performers alike enjoyed refreshments, including Welsh cakes and tea.
