Affordability is the watchword for federal lawmakers and President Trump as many Americans struggle with costs of various consumer products.
Kansas Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt says the situation may be unpleasant or painful, but it’s better than a lot of people may think.
Certain grocery store items have held largely steady or dipped somewhat over the last year, while others have jumped.
Schmidt says adjustments at the federal level over the last year are helping, including slower increases in federal spending and the overall tax code.
President Trump said he’s ending the affordability “crisis” during his State of the Union last week, and he blamed Democrats for a series of “dirty, rotten lies” about the economy. However, several polls have tracked significant concerns about affordability for months — and not just when it comes to groceries. Utility costs, childcare, rising healthcare premiums and real estate are areas where Americans have mentioned affordability concerns.
