Maize South defended their homecourt on Friday in a 74-61 win over Emporia in the 5A West Maize South Sub-State Final in Wichita.
Neither team led by more than one possession in the first as the Spartans took a 12-11 lead to the second. The Mavericks won quarter two 13-11 to take the narrow edge 24-23 to the break. The second ranked team in the 5A polls pulled away in the third with a 17-6 run and led 43-31 after three.
Evan Burns said the Mavericks made shots in the third and his team didn’t.
Terrick Franklin and Rylan Crowell each had 15 points. Harry Trelc added 14.
Maize South eliminated Emporia for a second straight season. EHS finishes with a 17-8 record. The Black and Red graduate Crowell, Tanner Seidl, Maddox Shivley, and Chase Harrington.
