The Emporia State athletics department was in action in multiple sports over the weekend.
The Hornet baseball team couldn’t follow up on a win in game one and fell two games to one to #3 Pittsburg State in their three-game series at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia over the weekend. The Hornet bats were quieted in a 6-2 loss on Saturday. Noah Steele picked up his third homer of the weekend to get the Hornets on the board before Nathon Cruz drove in a run in the third, but ESU didn’t score again. Colby Deaver (5-1) gave up his first runs of the season allowing a pair of earned scores in 5.2 innings on the way to the first loss of his career.
ESU never led on Sunday in an 11-7 setback. Pitt State scored a pair in the first and trailed 9-2 through six before five-straight runs got the Hornets within two following a four-run eighth inning, but the Gorillas added insurance in the ninth and E-State couldn’t make another push. Evan Abbott led the offense going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Quinton Chindamo (0-2) gave up five runs and seven hits in four innings to take the loss. E-State (14-5, 5-4 MIAA) heads to Edmond, Okla. where head coach John Martin leads the Hornets against his former team, Central Oklahoma, in a three-game series beginning Friday.
The Hornet tennis team was turned aside in a 6-1 loss to #36 Harding at the Kossover Family Tennis Center in Emporia on Saturday. ESU lost the doubles point and lost every singles match that was completed. Roko Kacer won the first set 6-2 and was up 4-0 in the second when his opponent retired. The Hornets (5-2) plays another non-conference MIAA/GAC match against the South Division when they head to Ouachita Baptist for a 2:00 p.m. dual on Wednesday.
