Roughly six weeks ago, a railroad Corridor Safety Improvements Study developed for the city’s different crossings and underpasses. A new website has launched as a special advisory committee has been announced and will be named soon.
The study is a partnership between the city of Emporia, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The website, corridorsafetyimprovements.com, includes a feedback editor for residents to share ideas, experiences and concerns. It also lets residents sign up for email updates.
Emporia has 15 crossings in a two-mile stretch from State to Weaver. The corridor in question is one block wide on either side of the railroad.
The tentative goal is to have in-person public meetings this fall and have a completed report by spring 2027.
The goal is to evaluate long-term improvements for crossings between State and Weaver, including mobility and quality of life improvements. Study funding is through the Federal Railroad Administration.
