Emporia High softball is hard at work as preparations continue for the 2026 season. Head coach Tommy McClure returns for his third year leading the Lady Spartans after the program finished 10-17 a season ago.
The Lady Spartans bring back four hitters who finished last season with batting averages above .288, giving the lineup a solid foundation heading into the spring.
Alivia Barrett led the team at the plate in 2025 with a .338 batting average and 11 doubles. The senior, who earned All-Centennial League First Team honors, will also return to the circle to anchor the Emporia pitching staff after starting all 27 games last season. Barrett is looking to build on that workload and take another step forward in her final high school season.
Emporia also returns two experienced outfielders for their senior campaigns in Molly Williams and Marley Sewell. Sewell hit .316 during her junior season and was named a second-team all-league selection. She knows this team is capable of big things.
Williams, who is committed to continue her volleyball and softball career at Heartland Community College, led the Lady Spartans with 26 runs scored and 22 stolen bases last season, providing speed and spark at the top of the lineup. She is always trying to figure out ways to help the team.
Another key senior returning is Yzabel Ultreras, who will once again handle duties at third base.
Ultreras has signed to continue her softball career at Allen Community College.
With a strong core of returning talent, McClure says he is excited about the potential of this year’s squad. He also noted that several new faces could make an immediate impact and help strengthen the roster.
Emporia will open the 2026 season at home on March 26 when the Black and Red host Ottawa.
