The Emporia State softball team split their Saturday doubleheader with Northeastern State at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. NSU scored the final four runs of the game on the way to a 6-2 win in game one of the twinbill. The teams traded unearned runs on errors in the first two innings then each scored on extra-base hits with Brooke Flewelling tripling home a run to tie the game in the fifth, but NSU scored three in the sixth and then added insurance in the seventh. Flewelling went 4-for-4 in the game but only three other Lady Hornets recorded a hit. Hannah Butterbaugh (8-2) lasted 5.0 innings and gave up four hits and two unearned runs to take the loss.
ESU jumped on the ‘Hawks early in game two on the way to an 8-3 victory. ESU scored four in the first and never trailed. ESU scored off a wild pitch, an Avery Brewer single, and two groundouts. Leslie Ramos drove in two in the third on a single and ESU went up 8-1 with an Elina Bartlett single in the fifth and a Northeastern error. Morgan Tomlinson (3-1) gave up seven hits but no runs in her 2.2 innings to earn the win. Head coach Megan Hill said the E-State pitchers had to battle while giving up 13 hits in the game.
ESU (16-7, 3-1 MIAA) returns to non-conference action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader at Drury.
