The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission has seized gaming equipment from an Emporia gas station.
Racing and Gaming Government Relations Manager and Law Enforcement Officer Randy Evans tells KVOE News officials from his department and Emporia Police joined forces to serve search warrants at Sunoco, 505 South Commercial, on Monday. The warrant search led to the seizure of five electronic gambling devices, associated paperwork and an unlisted amount of cash.
Evans says the devices look like slot machines and are touted as games of skill, but there is very little skill involved and the machines in questions are more set up to be games of chance. He also compared them to legal slot machines in casinos, saying the legal machines are heavily regulated and are supposed to have paybacks of 80-99 percent. The games in question typically have paybacks of 10 percent or less.
Evans also says this is part of seizures taking place across Kansas this year.
Word on formal charges is pending through the Lyon County Attorney’s Office. If formal charges are not filed, Racing and Gaming will begin asset forfeiture procedures.
