ESU baseball opened their midweek series at Missouri Western Wednesday afternoon holding off the Griffons for a 10-8 win. The Hornets jumped in front with a 3-run first inning thanks to a Noah Steele home run. Cooper Schwindt backed that up with a solo shot in the second. The Griffons got back a pair to make it 4-2 Hornets when an Even Abbott single re-extended the lead. He later doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 9-3 Hornets. Western scored the next four runs including three in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to two. The Griffons clawed back to within one, but the Hornets manufactured a run in the ninth for insurance and held on. Nick Woodcock (2-1) allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings with four walks but was assigned the win. Grant Huffman blanked the Griffons over his 2.1 innings to pick up a seven-out save for his fourth save of the year. ESU (17-6, 8-5 MIAA) jumps out of conference play to host New Mexico Highlands for a four-game set beginning on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
