The University of Kansas men’s basketball team used a 25-11 run to storm back and tie the game with under 30 seconds to go, but St. John’s hit a layup as time expired to knock off the Jayhawks in an exciting No. 4/No. 5 seed match up 67-65 at Viejas Arena in San Diego, Calif. on Sunday. The Jayhawks were down 14 before their comeback started. Darryn Peterson scored 21 points and hit two huge free throws to tie the game with 13.1 seconds left. KU had only fouled twice in the period and fouled four times in a row to drip the clock down to 3.9 seconds before Dylan Darling drove right and hit a contested layup for his only field goal of the game. KU trailed by eight at the half shooting just 35% at the break, but sizzled at a 56% clip in the second half. The Red Storm make the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 while KU wraps the year 24-11. Head coach Bill Self said after the game that he had not made a decision as to whether he is returning to the bench in 2026-27.
