Lyon County Commissioners have approved an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation that will lead to traffic safety improvements in the fiscal year 2028.
The agreement, presented by Lyon County Engineer Wayne Scritchfield to commissioners as part of their action meeting Thursday, will provide $620,000 for surveying county roadways and upgrading signage in FY 28 through the KDOT High Risk Rural Roads program.
Additionally, the dollars will go towards restriping county roads, an annual expense for the county that often totals over $60,000. Scritchfield says this is a great deal for the county as it will lead to both cost savings and improved safety on roads.
Scritchfield tells KVOE News the county will select the engineer to survey county roads, while KDOT will be responsible for letting the bid for the installation of the new signage and striping. Scritchfield says he is in the process of drawing up the documents for receiving bids at this time.
Commissioners also considered, and ultimately approved, a purchase request from Scritchfield to buy a turbo kit for a dump truck at nearly $5,500.
In separate business, commissioners approved an annual service contract invoice of almost $57,000 to Election Systems & Software for county election equipment. Sheriff’s Office representative Tobey Kelly also submitted a request to buy a pickup from Longbine Auto Plaza for nearly $50,000, as well as three separate truck upfitting invoices totaling almost $40,000. All were approved unanimously.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its regular action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
