Outdoor burning will be banned for the majority of the KVOE listening area for the third consecutive day Saturday.
Red Flag Warnings affect Lyon, Chase, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 11 am to 10 pm. Relative humidity levels under 20 percent, wind gusts between 30-40 mph and dry grasses are constant for the rest of Friday and Saturday.
Air temperatures will be nearly identical to Friday, with highs in the low to mid 60s; however, winds will shift from north to south ahead of an area warmup starting Sunday. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s to close out the weekend and will continue to rise through the early half of the work week, reaching close to 90 degrees by Monday before another cold front pushes into the area behind potential showers and storms Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs in the upper 50s by midweek into the following weekend.
Friday, Lyon County Fire District 5, Hartford/Neosho Rapids, was active responding to a pair of mutual aid requests as a result of the critical fire danger. LCFD 5 was first called to Coffey County for a fire that developed along a stretch of railroad tracks. At the same time, crews were called to assist with a fire reported in the median of a section of Interstate 35 within its own district.
Both fires were extinguished “promptly” and did not spread. LCFD thanked the “quick auto aid” of Reading and Lebo fire departments for their assistance. LCFD 5 also noted that Red Flag Warning days always lead to an “all hands on deck” situation and reminded residents to assist them by staying alert to any potential rekindles or fires that could become out of control quickly.
