A complete inventory of both equipment and evidence is still underway as the city of Americus continues work to officially close down the department.
According to City Attorney Steve Atherton, former Americus Police Chief Jody Meyers is in the process of conducting the inventory; however, he could not give an exact update on where he is in the process, nor when it may be completed. Atherton, who declined a recorded interview, did say, however, that the inventory includes both equipment and evidence in the department’s possession.
A question has been exactly what the city will do with department equipment as it moves towards the department’s dissolution. Some possibilities have included an auction or sale of the property, but no final decisions have been made.
Atherton says he expects those decisions could be made at the City Council’s next meeting in April.
As for evidence in the department’s possession, Atherton says it is highly likely that if any “contraband” is discovered, it will be subject to a destruction order unless it is related to any ongoing district court cases. Atherton stated that since the department did not handle a large number of drug-related cases, it is unlikely there will be much of said evidence in their possession.
