The Emporia State baseball team outhit Newman 16-4 on the way to winning the series with a 15-1 victory in game two of the three-game set on Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. The Hornets got on the board first in the top of the first with a grand slam by Noah Steele. Steele finished 5-for-5 with seven RBI’s while Evan Abbott went 4-for-4 with four runs and three RBI’s. The Hornets drilled seven home runs in the game with Steele and Abbott each accounting for two. Head coach John Martin said the team had a solid approach at the plate with the wind blowing out.
Colby Deaver (8-2) scattered four hits while giving up just one unearned run while striking out eight Jets with no walks. He said the slider was on point on Friday.
Martin picked up his 300th career conference victory with the win. ESU (26-8, 13-7 MIAA) goes for the series sweep on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
